The Instructor

Ian Rayment is a fully qualified DSA Approved Driving Instructor who is also PASS PLUS registered.

Ian Rayment

He takes great pride in his patient and thorough, yet relaxed and friendly, approach to driving instruction. He has successfully assisted pupils of all abilities, ages and experience through their practical driving tests.

Ian is highly reliable and guarantees professional 1-2-1 tuition at all times.

It is not enough to put a pupil in the driving seat, give them instructions and expect them to learn. They need to know why we do things the way we do. They need coaching, not just instructing. And it is important that the learning process be an enjoyable experience... Ian Rayment

Pass Plus

Pass Plus is a training scheme for new drivers designed by the Driving Standards Agency with the help of the motor insurance and driving instruction industries, to make you a safer driver. A modular course, it consists of a minimum 6 hours tuition covering aspects of:

  • town driving
  • all-weather driving
  • out of town driving & rural roads
  • night driving
  • dual carriageways
  • motorways

Many insurance companies will offer large discounts off your first insurance premium if you complete the PASS PLUS course. There may also be a £70 cash-back available through the Pass Plus - London initiative which is subsidised by Transport for London (details available).

Therefore, completing the PASS PLUS should prove very cost effective and useful to you.

The Facts

  • Newly qualified drivers are more likely to have an accident in their first two years of driving than at any other time.
  • 1 in 3 male drivers aged 17-20 have a serious accident within two years of passing their test.
  • In an accident young male drivers are 9 times likely to be at fault than older drivers with same experience.
  • Inexperienced drivers take 2 seconds longer to recognize possible danger than experienced drivers.
  • 22% of all car drivers involved in an injury collision in the Greater London area in 2005 were young drivers.
  • 3 young people die every day in road crashes in Britain.

Pass Plus offers new drivers additional professional instruction, helping them to:

  • gain quality driving experience safely
  • become a more skilful driver

Intensive and Refresher Courses

Intensive Courses

Intensive courses are block booked lessons that are usually scheduled into a period of between 1 and 4 weeks before a test.

There are many reasons for considering an intensive course of lessons:

  • Time may be precious for you and it may be difficult to fit regular weekly lessons into your diary due to work or family commitments.
  • Perhaps there is a job waiting for you that requires you to have a full UK driving licence.
  • Or maybe you just want to learn to drive and pass your test as quick as you can so that you can enjoy the freedom you will have that much sooner.
  • Do you have a car sitting on your driveway that is waiting to be driven by you?
  • It is possible you have already had a lot of lessons, but not for some time, and you just want to get the test over and done with.

There are a few options available, for example:

  • 20 hours - for the more experienced learner driver
  • 30 hours - for the less experienced learner
  • 40 hours - for the novice learner

Call Rayment's School of Motoring to discuss your individual needs and arrange an assessment lesson.

Refresher Courses

These are also structured to the individuals needs.

  • It is possible that, having passed your test, you have not driven for some time.
  • Or you have passed your test but feel you need more tuition on a particular aspect of driving which was not covered enough on your lessons.
  • Or perhaps you had difficulty with one or more aspects of driving such as parking on busy streets and in car parks.
  • You will not have covered motorway driving in your lessons and chose not to do the PASS PLUS course.
  • Your company wishes you to have an insurance assessment before driving that company car.
  • Maybe you just feel you need help in improving your driving skills.

Whatever your reason or need, Rayment's School of Motoring can help.

The Theory Test

Before booking your practical driving test you must have passed your theory test, and this can be easier said than done. The theory test consists of two parts - multiple choice questions and hazard perception videos. Although they are parts of the same test and are taken together, they are marked separately and have to be passed separately. Failing one means you will have to take both parts again.

  • The first part is a computer based multiple-choice test.
  • You will have 57 minutes in which to answer up to 50 questions randomly chosen from the Highway Code. The pass mark is 43 correctly answered questions.
  • The second part is the hazard perception test which consists of a series of 14 computer based video clips showing real life driving situations.
  • There is a demonstration and explanation before this part of the test starts for real
  • There are 13 clips with one developing hazard, and one clip featuring two developing hazards but necessarily in that order.
  • To achieve a high score (max 5) on each clip, you must respond to the hazards in the early part of their development. The pass mark is 44 points out of a possible 75.
  • There are a variety of books and software available for purchase that will help you with this test
  • Help and advice is available from Rayment's School of Motoring

Rayment's School of Motoring can provide you with Theory Test assistance and support if needed, and does provide guidance on books and software to help you pass this test.

Please note, you can start your driving lessons before taking the theory test providing you are aged 17+ yrs and have a valid provisional driving licence.

Advice For Seeking An Instructor

When asking any Driving School for a price, please also ask the following questions:

Is the instructor part qualified (pink licence holder) or fully qualified (green licence holder)?
This matters if you are seeking continuity of instruction with the same instructor... 'pink licences' are only valid for 6 months.
How reliable is the instructor?
Will he turn up on time every time?
Is their licence current and valid? Can they produce it for you to see?
All fully qualified DSA registered instructors are periodically required to renew their registration with the DSA. The expiry date is clearly shown on the licence.
Will you be fully insured whilst driving?
Is the instructor fully insured to allow provisional licence holders to drive their car? Can he/she produce an insurance certificate to prove this?
If your car breaks down what arrangements are there in place to ensure your lessons/test are not affected?
Do they piggy back?
Some instructors use part of a pupil's lesson to pick up their next pupil. Do you really want to be a taxi driver?
How much time will you spend parked up listening to your instructor talk (or watching him/her smoke)?
Can the instructor produce for you confirmation that he/she has had a Criminal Records Bureau check carried out on them?
This is for your protection. The DSA insist that all instructors are subject to a CRB check in order to verify their suitability to being a driving instructor.

And beware........ PAYING LESS OFTEN GETS YOU LESS!
